Unionville Old Tavern Ride

Our first ride highlights the Unionville Old Tavern, 3.3 miles from our recommended parking area. The Unionville Old Tavern was added to the national register of historic places in 1973. Erected in 1798 it is one of the first and oldest taverns in Ohio, and played an important role in the community for many years. It was an important stop on the underground railroad. There is/was a tunnel leading from the basement to a false grave in the graveyard across the street, and out into the field behind the tavern. Currently closed to the public, the tavern has fallen into disrepair. Thanks to efforts by the SAVE THE TAVERN! committee, pressure is being put on the current owner to do something. Information is available at Great Lakes Tattoo and the Madison Historical Society, both located in Madison Village.
Other things to explore nearby include the Red Button Antique Shop and the Unionville Cemetery.
